What is COR®?

IHSA COR™ Certified

The Certificate of Recognition (COR®) is a national accreditation standard that verifies full implementation of an employer’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System. COR® is often used as a condition of contract by the public and private sectors across Canada.

Recently, COR® was enhanced to COR® 2020 in order to streamline the auditing process and allow organizations the flexibility to tailor their program to best suit their needs while also meeting COR® requirements.

COR® 2020 also helps interested workplaces qualify for recognition from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) under two provincial programs:

How Does SOSE Work?

Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employers is a voluntary Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development program run by the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO). It promotes health and safety in the workplace and helps reduce injuries and illness.

The program is made up of two parts:

  • Accreditation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS)
  • Recognition of employers who have successfully implemented an accredited OHSMS and meet other criteria set by the CPO

COR® 2020 is one of the existing OHSMS standards accredited by the CPO. If your firm is currently using COR®, you may be eligible to apply for recognition by the CPO. Your ability to apply depends on the status of your COR® certification:

  • COR® 2020 certified organizations may apply for CPO recognition, provided they have had an external audit within the previous 12 months and corrected any issues identified in the audit, through a SOSE Action Plan. Contact for details.
  • COR® 2015 certified organizations must successfully transition to COR® 2020 through an external audit before applying for CPO recognition.
  • Organizations that are currently working towards COR® 2020 certification (i.e., not yet certified) cannot apply for CPO recognition. They must successfully achieve COR® 2020 certification before applying.

If your organization is recognized by the CPO, you may be eligible for financial rewards from the WSIB.
