About John M. Beck

John M. Beck Award

John M. Beck is founder and Executive Chairman of Aecon Group Inc. His dedication to occupational health and safety is an inspiration to the construction industry.

The Award

Generously sponsored by Aecon, the John M. Beck Award is presented annually to a project-based Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) in the Ontario construction industry. The award recognizes the contributions the committee has made to health and safety in the previous year. The Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) administers the award. The successful committee is recognized on a commemorative plaque presented each year at IHSA’s Annual General Meeting.

Criteria

To qualify, a health and safety committee must be constituted and conducted according to Ontario legislation. The committee must demonstrate extraordinary leadership, initiative, creativity, and innovation in developing policy, procedures, tools, or communications for protecting the health and safety of all those on a construction site.

Greater consideration for the John M. Beck Award will be given to nominees who value diversity and have shown due consideration for others’ opinions, perspectives, and uniqueness in a way that supports the creation of an all-inclusive work environment.

Judging

The judging committee, comprised of members of IHSA’s Provincial Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee, reviews the nominations and selects the on-site JHSC that has best fulfilled the award criteria.
