The Working Mind For The Trades - Manager

Program Description

The Working Mind (TWM) for the Trades – Manager is an evidence-based training program developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and adapted by IHSA for Ontario’s trades sectors. This course is designed to help managers, supervisors, and workplace leaders reduce stigma around mental health, build resilience, and foster psychologically safe workplaces.

Participants will learn practical strategies to recognize changes in mental health, engage in supportive conversations, and manage stress effectively. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and scenario-based activities, managers will gain tools to support both their own mental health and that of their teams.

Includes videos featuring lived experiences, group discussions, and hands-on activities.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Who Should Attend?

Managers, supervisors, forepersons, and other workplace leaders in construction, electrical, utilities, transportation, and related trades.

What You’ll Learn

  • Understand mental health and mental illness as a continuum.
  • Recognize signs of good, declining, and poor mental health in yourself and others.
  • Identify and reduce stigma and barriers to care in the workplace.
  • Apply the Mental Health Continuum Tool to monitor well-being.
  • Practice the Big Four coping strategies to manage stress and build resilience.
  • Support team members using practical tools and resources, including responding to critical incidents.

Learning Evaluation

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Foster a culture of mental health awareness and support.
  • Engage confidently in conversations about mental health.
  • Implement strategies to maintain personal resilience and workplace well-being.
