Program Description

This IHSA course is hands-on

This program prepares telecommunication construction technicians for overhead installation of both co-axial and fibre optic cable. Participants will not only learn what is required of them to install overhead plant, but the hazards associated with such installations.

  • Interpretation of relevant Regulations, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Canada Labour Code – Part II
  • Traffic control
  • Electrical awareness
  • Personal safety and climbing equipment

  • Pole line construction
  • Ladder safety
  • Underground hazards
  • Confined space entry
 

Who Should Attend?

New hires required to install overhead telecommunication systems on utility poles.

Personal Protective Equipment / What to Bring

Participants are required to bring their own CSA-approved head, eye, and foot protection, leather work gloves, rubber gloves, clothing suitable for outside work (FR rated for work in an electrical environment), climbing equipment and hand tools (belt and spurs), approved fall arrest system (harness and shock-absorbing lanyard), and approved fall restrict system for climbing wood poles. Attendees will not be permitted to participate in the course if they do not bring the noted personal protective equipment and tools.

NOTE

Delivery of this program at your facility will require a suitable space to complete the practical portion of the program as well as the required equipment. Please check with your IHSA Consultant/Trainer for specific requirements.

 

Prerequisites

Working at Heights certification is a prerequisite for this course.

 

Learning Evaluation

A score of 70% is required on the final knowledge evaluation and practical skill demonstration for successful completion of the course.

 

Participant Course Evaluation

At the end of the training, participants will have the opportunity to evaluate and provide comments about the training they received.
