Program Description

This IHSA course is hands-on

This program teaches participants how to safely use a suspended work platform system or a powered boatswain’s (or bosun’s) chair. It is designed to meet the training requirements outlined in the current Construction Projects regulation (O. Reg. 213/91, s. 138) and Window Cleaning regulation (Reg. 859, s. 45).

Participants will learn about the requirements for roof plans and work plans, as well as the two separate systems of support when working from a suspended work platform: (1) the fall arrest system and (2) the suspended work platform system. In addition, participants will be engaged in both classroom and hands-on activities relating to the daily inspection and safe use of the fall arrest system and suspended work platform system.

Program Content

Main topics include:

  • Fall Protection Systems
  • Suspended Work Platform Systems
  • Roof Plans and Work Plans
  • Safe Set-up
  • Safe Operation

Who Should Attend?

Workers, supervisors, and third-party representatives who use suspended work platform systems or powered boatswain’s chairs after they have been set up and installed by others.

Prerequisites

IHSA's Working at Heights – Fundamentals of Fall Prevention course or an equivalent working at heights course that was approved by the MLTSD/CPO.

NOTE

While not a prerequisite, IHSA recommends that participants complete IHSA’s Hoisting and Rigging course before attending this training. This course will provide participants with fundamental knowledge of hoisting and rigging practices, which will make them better equipped to complete the Suspended Access Equipment Users program.

Personal Protective Equipment / What to Bring

Participants must bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and it must be maintained and in good working order as per the manufacturer’s specifications and regulatory requirements. This PPE will be used during hands-on training.

Participants are required to bring the following:

  • Clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions
  • CSA-certified head, foot, and eye protection
  • Leather work gloves for handling sharp objects and reeving suspension cable.
  • Fall protection equipment including a lanyard (30 inches or less), harness, and 5/8" rope grab
  • Measuring tape and a calculator.

Participants who do not have the necessary PPE will not be able to complete the program and will be asked to reschedule when they have the proper clothing and equipment.

Learning Evaluation

This course consists of a combination of classroom and hands-on learning activities. To obtain a certificate of completion for this program, participants must be present for the full program and meet the following evaluation requirements:

1. Complete the written multiple-choice test and achieve a grade of 75%.

2. Complete a hands-on demonstration of specific critical tasks and achieve a score of 100%.

IHSA will issue a certificate of completion only to those who successfully meet the evaluation requirements. For participants with language, literacy, or accommodation needs, alternative evaluation methods to the written test may be used to verify that key concepts have been understood. Please discuss your needs with an IHSA customer service representative when registering and confirm your arrangements with the instructor prior to the beginning of class.

In addition to successfully completing this training course, workers must receive site-specific training and instruction from their employer. Employers must ensure that workers receive adequate oral and written instructions by a competent person and that they are adequately trained on the site-specific work plan and on the specific equipment that will be used in their workplace.

NOTE

Delivery of this program at your facility will require a suitable space to complete the practical portion of the program as well as the required equipment. Please check with your IHSA Consultant/Trainer for specific requirements.

Participant Course Evaluation

At the end of the training, participants will have the opportunity to evaluate and provide comments about the training they received.
