In a trucking yard, there are always a lot of moving parts including people walking around, multiple commercial vehicles coming from various directions, as well as other vehicles entering and exiting the yard. All of these factors contribute to a potentially dangerous working environment, where it is important for everyone to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

The following resources will help guide drivers, employers and all staff to navigate hazards in a yard.

Overview: Industry experts analyze root causes of yard incidents

In 2019, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), IHSA hosted a Risk Assessment Workshop to determine the top health and safety concerns within the general trucking sector. Based on the results of the risk assessment, further root-cause workshops have been scheduled, and facilitated to assist in providing the transportation industry with resources to support health and safety.

Yard Safety Root-Cause Workshop

In 2021, IHSA facilitated a root-cause analysis workshop, with support by the MLTSD. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop was facilitated virtually and took place on January 26-27, 2021.

The workshop participants included peer-recognized subject-matter experts from the industry (employers and drivers) along with other industry stakeholders who, over the course of the two days, worked together to identify and prioritize causal factors for yard safety in the trucking sector (general freight). Using the fishbone/cause and effect methodology a list of primary root causes for yard safety in the general trucking sector was created.
