MOL Blitz

Ministry of Labour looks at high-risk construction in March

Last month, we announced the Ministry of Labour would be conducting a month-long blitz in March with a focus on

  • high-rise formwork
  • low-rise formwork
  • masonry
  • outside finishing
  • built-up roofing

These sectors have been selected due to the high potential for hazards, including

  • unsafe use of equipment
  • slips, trips and falls
  • inadequate training and supervision of workers (especially new and young workers).

According to the Ministry of Labour, the lost-time injury rates experienced by these sectors are much higher than the rest of the construction industry.

MOL inspectors will check to see that

  • work areas are safe from hazards that cause slips, trips or falls
  • workers are using fall protection systems properly
  • equipment such as ladders, platforms and scaffolds are being used correctly.

IHSA encourages all companies to review their worksites and ensure hazards such as these are addressed. A great resource for information on how to reduce hazards can be found in IHSA's Construction Health and Safety Manual. This publication can be downloaded online and you can also order hard copies.
