Three key powerline safety tips for Powerline Safety Week
According to the Electrical Safety Authority, powerlines are a leading cause of electrical death in Ontario, and 60 per cent of all powerline contacts happen in the construction industry.
IHSA is promoting Powerline Safety Week from May 12 to 16, 2025. Take a moment during this campaign to remind your workforce of these three essential powerline safety tips:
1. Recognize the dangers of powerlines
Locate all overhead powerlines before starting any work. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially toward the end of the day when you are tired or rushing to finish a job.
2. Keep you and your equipment at least 3 metres away from overhead powerlines
You do not have to touch a powerline to get a deadly shock. Electricity can jump or “arc” to you or your tools if you get too close. Always keep a 3-metre gap between you, your tools, and powerlines. Remember that orange coverups make powerlines easier to see, but they do not make them less dangerous.
3. Stay 10 metres from a downed powerline
There is no way to know if a powerline is live just by looking at it. Wires do not have to spark to show they are live. Always assume a downed powerline is energized and dangerous. Call 9-1-1 and the local utility immediately and ensure everyone stays at least 10 metres back from fallen powerlines.
