What to put on a construction workplace health and safety board

Prominently displayed, your board can reinforce best practices and an overall culture of safe work.

construction workplace health and safety board

Employers at Ontario construction jobsites are required by law to display important safety information on a workplace health and safety board—as well as a notice board at the first aid station. These boards have a variety of critical functions: they help uphold each worker’s right to know about hazards at the jobsite and provide resources for reporting health and safety concerns. They also demonstrate the employer’s commitment to keeping workers safe.

When an inspector from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development (MLITSD) visits a workplace, the health and safety board and first aid station are among the first things they look for. They must be placed in a central location on the jobsite to ensure they can be easily seen and accessed by all workers. They must also have a number of specific documents posted—and others must be made available on site for reference.

Post these documents on the health and safety board

  • Prevention Starts Here poster from MLITSD
  • WSIB In Case of Injury poster (a.k.a. “1, 2, 3, 4” poster)

  • MLITSD inspector’s orders and inspection reports, if issued
  • Contact information for the nearest MLITSD office

  • Name of the constructor and contact information for its principal office in Ontario

  • MLITSD Notice of Project, if the project is over $50,000 or meets other criteria requiring a Notice of Project
