About Ken Hellawell

Ken Hellawell Transportation Safety Award

Ken Hellawell was a true ambassador in the Canadian trucking community. He was a pillar and a pioneer of promoting truck safety. Back in 1964 a small group of safety managers and stakeholders met to form the genesis of the Transportation Safety Association and the Fleet Safety Council that carries on to this day.

Ken enjoyed a storied career as a commercial vehicle operator, drivertrainer and successful truck safety consultant. He was an innovator with respect to transportation development and was a fixture in truck driving championships as competitor, sponsor, and president of the championships.

Ken was passionate about truck safety, worked with numerous carriers and was mentor to countless drivers, driver trainers and safety managers on whom all, he left an everlasting impact with respect to transportation safety.

 

Criteria

The Ken Hellawell Transportation Safety Award was established to recognize contributions made by an individual or group that is active or retired from the Ontario Transportation industry and exhibits extraordinary leadership, initiative, creativity, and innovation towards the advancement of health and safety.

The Ken Hellawell Transportation Safety Award is presented annually to a qualified individual or group who have diligently served the cause of transportation health and safety through services, contributions, inventions, procedures, or in any manner considered by the judging committee as being worthy of recognition.

 

Judging

The recipient must have demonstrated outstanding service with respect to the advancement of the Transportation Industry and/or their community in the promotion of transportation safety.

Candidates may have demonstrated one of the following accomplishments:

  • Made a development of policy, procedures, tools, or communications for promotion or enhancing the health and safety of the general public and/or those in the Transportation Sector that achieved positive and measurable safety improvements of significant and enduring benefit.
  • Assumed leadership roles during their career that has contributed to the improvement or advancement of transportation safety.
  • Made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of transportation safety.
  • Made a long-term contribution to the advancement of academic studies and the development of tomorrow's transportation safety leaders.
 

Nominations

Deadline for submission: August 31, 2023 at 4pm (EST).

Notice of "Call for Nominations" shall be announced by the IHSA in March of the year, for the previous year.

  • Nominations should be submitted in writing, either on the attached form or by letter, and sent to: admin@fleetsafetycouncil.com
  • Nominations shall be reviewed by a selection review committee formed by IHSA. The committee shall review all nominations and decide by vote the best candidate for the Award.
  • Note: Current IHSA Board of Director members are not eligible for this award.
